Precision Level Vial Manufacturing Capability
A precision level vial is a sealed glass inclination-sensing component in which bubble displacement corresponds to a small angular change of the parent instrument. In tubular vials, the internal working surface is manufactured with a controlled curvature that determines the sensitivity of the vial.
UKRPRIBOR can manufacture level vials against:
- legacy USSR / GOST designations and drawings;
- DIN cylindrical-vial requirements where applicable;
- European metric customer drawings;
- US inch or dual-dimension drawings;
- OEM-controlled part drawings;
- replacement and legacy equipment specifications;
- special-purpose and defence procurement drawings.
Production may include prototype, replacement and serial manufacture, subject to technical review of the required sensitivity, dimensions, materials, environmental conditions and inspection requirements.
Legacy USSR / GOST Level Vials
UKRPRIBOR can manufacture level vials based on legacy Soviet / GOST specifications and drawings, including designs used in measuring instruments, surveying equipment, alignment systems, optical assemblies and other legacy equipment.
A principal reference for this product family is GOST 2386-73 “Level vials. Specifications”. The standard covers level vials used to set instruments, devices and equipment horizontally or vertically and to measure small angles of inclination.
| GOST type | Description | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| AK | Circular level vial with circular graduation marks. | Levelling in two perpendicular directions. |
| ACP / АЦП | Simple cylindrical level vial with graduation or centre reference. | General-purpose inclination and levelling applications. |
| ACK / АЦК | Compensated cylindrical vial for medium- and high-sensitivity applications. | Precision instruments and special optical or alignment assemblies. |
| ACR / АЦР | Cylindrical chambered vial with adjustable bubble length. | Applications requiring bubble-length adjustment. |
GOST 2386-73 also provides different execution variants, including normal and thermally resistant versions and, for certain cylindrical types, reversible or special-graduation executions. The exact designation, sensitivity and dimensions should be taken from the applicable drawing, GOST table or customer specification.
Legacy GOST references are used for identification, reproduction, repair and compatibility with existing equipment. They should not be presented as equivalent to a current DIN, ISO or US specification unless dimensional and functional equivalence has been separately established.
DIN and European Specification Level Vials
For European cylindrical precision vials, DIN 2276-1:1986-06 is particularly relevant because it directly specifies cylindrical spirit level vials — dimensions and requirements.
Where a European customer drawing invokes DIN 2276-1, the applicable dimensional and functional requirements can be incorporated into the manufacturing and inspection specification.
For finished precision levels and inclination measuring instruments, DIN 877:1986-06 is an instrument-level reference. It should therefore not be described as a product standard for the vial itself.
| Reference | Scope | Use in an order |
|---|---|---|
| DIN 2276-1:1986-06 | Cylindrical spirit level vials — dimensions and requirements. | Direct component-level reference where invoked by the drawing or specification. |
| DIN 877:1986-06 | Inclination measuring instruments / levels. | Parent-instrument reference; applicable vial requirements are derived from the instrument design and drawing. |
| ISO 1101 / ISO GPS | Geometrical tolerancing. | Used where customer drawings specify geometry according to ISO GPS conventions. |
| ISO 10110 series | Optical drawing conventions and optical characteristics. | Used where optical-component requirements are explicitly specified. |
US Specification Level Vials
US OEM drawings commonly identify a vial by a customer part number, dimensions, angular sensitivity and a specified division length. Drawings may use inch dimensions, metric dimensions or dual dimensioning.
Where specified by the customer, geometric tolerancing can be interpreted according to ASME Y14.5.
For optical or defence assemblies, a drawing may additionally invoke optical surface or environmental requirements. These requirements should only be applied where they are technically relevant and explicitly identified by the customer specification.
| Parameter | European / metric | US / customer drawing |
|---|---|---|
| Angular sensitivity | arc sec or arc min per stated metric division | arc sec or arc min per stated inch or metric division |
| Common division reference | 2 mm where specified | 0.100 in where specified |
| Gradient | mm/m | in/ft or angular units |
| Dimensions | mm | inch, mm or dual dimensions |
| Drawing system | ISO GPS / customer requirements | ASME Y14.5 / customer requirements where specified |
The division length must always accompany the angular sensitivity. The same numerical angular value per 2 mm and per 0.100 in describes different linear bubble displacement and should not be treated as identical.
Sensitivity, Gradient and Bore Radius
Sensitivity is the angular inclination required to move the bubble by one specified division. A smaller angular value per division corresponds to a more sensitive vial.
For small angles:
gradient ≈ tan(θ) ≈ θ in radians
For a tubular vial with a defined division length, the required working curvature can be related geometrically to the angular sensitivity. The exact manufacturing and acceptance values should be based on the controlled drawing and inspection method.
| Sensitivity | Approx. gradient | Approx. in/ft | Approx. geometric radius |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 arc sec / 2 mm | 0.0097 mm/m | 0.00012 in/ft | 206 m |
| 5 arc sec / 2 mm | 0.024 mm/m | 0.00029 in/ft | 82.5 m |
| 10 arc sec / 2 mm | 0.049 mm/m | 0.00058 in/ft | 41.3 m |
| 20 arc sec / 2 mm | 0.097 mm/m | 0.00116 in/ft | 20.6 m |
| 30 arc sec / 2 mm | 0.145 mm/m | 0.00175 in/ft | 13.8 m |
| 1 arc min / 2 mm | 0.291 mm/m | 0.00349 in/ft | 6.9 m |
| 2 arc min / 2 mm | 0.582 mm/m | 0.00698 in/ft | 3.4 m |
| 5 arc min / 2 mm | 1.45 mm/m | 0.0175 in/ft | 1.38 m |
These values are geometric reference conversions, not a declaration that every listed sensitivity is available in every vial size. The final producible combination of sensitivity, diameter, length, temperature execution and graduation must be confirmed during technical review.
Available Vial Types and Executions
Depending on the required specification, manufacturing may include:
- tubular precision vials;
- circular level vials;
- simple cylindrical vials;
- compensated cylindrical vials;
- chambered / adjustable-bubble vials;
- reversible executions;
- custom and asymmetric graduation patterns;
- metric, inch and dual-dimension executions;
- normal and thermally resistant executions where technically applicable;
- special customer-controlled designs.
Custom Level Vials and Legacy Replacements
Custom manufacture can be evaluated from:
- a controlled customer drawing;
- a legacy GOST or DIN designation;
- an OEM part number;
- a procurement specification;
- technical documentation of the parent instrument;
- a reference sample together with sufficient functional data.
For replacement applications, external dimensions alone are not sufficient to establish interchangeability. Sensitivity, division convention, internal geometry, bubble characteristics, temperature behaviour, graduation and acceptance criteria must also be considered.
Inspection and Quality Control
| Inspection | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Dimensional inspection | Dimensions and tolerances defined by the drawing. |
| Sensitivity test | Verification of angular division value using the agreed inspection method. |
| Bubble movement / functional inspection | Verification of specified functional behaviour. |

Current and Legacy Standard References
Legacy drawings often remain in service for decades. UKRPRIBOR can therefore work with both current and superseded references when they are required to reproduce, repair or support an existing instrument.
| Reference | Status | Use |
|---|---|---|
| GOST 2386-73 | Legacy USSR-origin specification; still maintained in some standards databases | Manufacture and reproduction of GOST-design level vials and legacy parts. |
| DIN 2276:1959-09 | Withdrawn; replaced by DIN 2276-1:1986-06 | Legacy drawing cross-reference only. |
| ISO 9849:2017 | Withdrawn; replaced by ISO 9849:2026 | Legacy terminology and documentation cross-reference. |
| ISO 12857-1:1997 | Withdrawn; replaced by ISO 17123-2:2001 | Legacy surveying-instrument documentation only. |
Legacy references are not presented as current international standards. They are retained for identification, reproduction, repair, interoperability assessment and historical procurement documentation.
Defence and NATO Procurement
Precision level vials can be manufactured for defence and long-life equipment programmes against controlled customer drawings and contractual inspection requirements.
Where explicitly invoked by contract, quality planning and inspection documentation may need to address NATO quality-assurance requirements such as:
- AQAP 2110 — quality assurance requirements for design, development and production;
- AQAP 2131 — quality assurance requirements for final inspection and test;
- STANAG 4107 — the NATO framework associated with mutual Government Quality Assurance and AQAP implementation.
No blanket claim of “NATO certification” is made. AQAP requirements apply only when invoked by the procurement contract and when the required quality system, inspection plan and evidence have been agreed.
For US defence drawings, additional requirements may reference MIL-STD-810 environmental test methods or optical acceptance criteria based on MIL-PRF-13830B. These requirements must be specified by the customer and applied only to the relevant characteristics and test procedures.
Documentation Available by Agreement
The required document package should be agreed before production because some inspection results must be generated and recorded during manufacture.
- Certificate of Conformity;
- Dimensional Inspection Report;
- Sensitivity / Division Value Test Report;
- First Article Inspection Report where required;
- Material documentation where available and applicable;
- Batch traceability record;
- Customer-specific inspection report;
- Certificate of Origin where required;
- measurement traceability information where applicable.
No certificate or accreditation should be assumed to be included unless explicitly stated in the quotation and purchase specification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you manufacture legacy GOST level vials?
Yes, subject to technical review. Legacy GOST designations and drawings can be used as manufacturing references for replacement and serial production.
Can you manufacture a vial to DIN 2276-1?
DIN 2276-1:1986-06 is a current European standard covering cylindrical spirit level vials, dimensions and requirements. A vial can be evaluated for production against the applicable DIN requirements and customer drawing.
Can you make US-style level vials?
Yes, subject to technical review. US drawings may use inch or dual dimensions, ASME Y14.5 tolerancing and sensitivity expressed per a specified inch division such as 0.100 in.
Can old ISO or DIN references still be used?
Yes, as legacy cross-references when supporting existing equipment. Withdrawn standards are clearly identified as legacy and are not represented as current requirements.
Are your level vials NATO certified?
No blanket NATO certification is claimed. For defence procurement, manufacturing and documentation can be configured to the customer-controlled drawing and applicable contractual quality requirements, including AQAP requirements where explicitly invoked.
Can you reproduce a vial from a sample?
A reference sample can support technical evaluation, but dimensional similarity alone is not sufficient. Sensitivity, division length, internal working geometry, temperature behaviour, graduation and acceptance criteria must also be established.
